Q.
How do I use the Dryerballs?
-
A.
Place both Dryerballs in the dryer with your fabrics, and set
the dryer to the desired heat setting. The unique design of the
Dryerballs lift and separate your clothes, drying the clothes
evenly and softening the material naturally.
-
Q.
How do the Dryerballs work?
-
A.
Dryerballs lift and separate clothes, moving air efficiently
through the dryer. This reduces drying by 15-25%. And because
the clothes are not all balled up in a bunch, 10 minutes on
medium heat will also push wrinkles right out and help eliminate
lint buildup on your clothes.
For $20, plus tax, the Dryerballs will last you 3-5 years. That
works out to around $4 a year - and you'll also save on your
electricity on top of not having to buy fabric softeners. With
two boxes of fabric softener costing $20 and lasting one to two
months in an average household, your Dryerballs will pay for
themselves in their first use.
-
Q.
Will Dryerballs transfer color in my dryer?
-
A.
No. Dryerballs will absorb dyes from your clothing but will not
transfer dyes onto your clothing.
-
Q.
Will Dryerballs eliminate static?
-
A.
Dryerballs do not eliminate static; they only help to prevent
it. Climate and over drying are the main causes for static.
Additional things you can do to help reduce static are:
- Decrease drying time
- Use less detergent
- Separate synthetics from the rest of your clothes
-
Q.
Do Dryerballs cut down on drying time? And how?
-
A.
Yes! Nellie's Dryerballs cut your drying time anywhere from
15%-25%. As the Dryerballs tumble around in your dryer they lift
and separate your clothes. This allows air to flow more
efficiently throughout your dryer thus decreasing your drying
time
-
Q.
Why have the tips on my Dryerballs turned color?
-
A.
The color change is due to the dyes from your clothes and dirt
from your dryer.
-
Q.
Have the Dryerballs been tested and proven to work?
-
A.
Laboratory Test Report
Report Number: 04-S-158926-1
Date Received: 08-Jun-04
Date Testing Commenced: 02-Jul-04
Date of this Report: 12-Jul-04
Date Testing Completed: 19-Jul-04
Sample Identification
The comments in the report are for guidance only and should not
be used in isolation or without consideration of the results. In
all circumstances, results of tests are implied as referring
only to the samples supplied for analysis only and should not be
construed or interpreted on any other basis.
Test Request
The samples supplied for testing are tumble dry balls which have
been assessed to determine if a claim that when used, as
recommended, the balls soften the fabric, reduce drying time,
reduce creasing 'wrinkles', reduces ironing and static.
Comments on Test Results
A standard wash load of 4 single sheets, 3 pillowcases and 2
shirts were used for the trial. The total mass of the load was
2040g.
Bed sheets x 4, 50% cotton 50% polyester
Pillow cases x 2, 50% cotton 50% polyester
Pillow case x 1, 100% cotton (easy care)
Shirt x 1 100% cotton
Shirt x 1 50% cotton 50% polyester
Two identical loads were washed at 50°C according to BS EN
26330:1994 4A 50°C. One was then tumble dried in a moisture
detecting tumble dryer set to Cupboard Dry, with two tumble dry
balls and the other load without balls. The degree of creasing
was assessed using method Appearance of Apparel after Domestic
Laundering AATCC 143:1996 (2001). Only the base fabric was
assessed. The softness was assessed subjectively by hand.
Conclusion
The tests indicate the balls slightly reduce creasing during
tumble drying. On the items tested, it is unlikely the consumer
would notice the difference unless they have one item dried with
balls and one without to compare.
The softness was assessed by hand. The individuals carrying out
the assessment have worked in dyeing and finishing and are used
to assessing softness. It is our opinion that the items tumble
dried with the balls are softer.
The test carried out shows that the drying rate with the balls
is 15 to 25% faster if the load is taken to an even dryness.
The test results do substantiate the claims made on the
packaging that the use of the balls in tumble drying soften the
fabric, reduces drying time, and reduces creasing and
'wrinkles'. The improvements are not significant but are real.
It was not possible to assess the effect on static.

Q.
What's in the Laundry Soda?
-
A.
SODA ASH - (SODIUM CARBONATE) also known as washing soda. In
domestic use, it's used as a water softener during laundry.
SODIUM METASILICATE - A major use is as a builder (a material
that enhances or maintains the cleaning efficiency of a
surfactant, principally by inactivating water hardness) in soaps
and detergents
SODIUM CHLORIDE - Sodium chloride, also known as common salt,
table salt, or halite. As well as the familiar uses of salt in
cooking, salt is used in many applications, from manufacturing
pulp and paper to setting dyes in textiles and fabric, to
producing soaps and detergents.
CITRIC ACID - This is a weak organic acid. It serves as an
environmentally benign cleaning agent and acts as an
antioxidant.
The Detergent is Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate. It is a coconut
based (LAURYL) Ethoxylated fatty alcohol. Coconut oil on its own
will wash nothing. It is therefore chemically modified so that
it becomes surface active and thus performs like a detergent.
This commodity is widely used by many detergent manufacturers
because it is readily biodegradable, non toxic and mild and
efficient. It is also NOT Petroleum
based.

Q.
How do I use the Laundry Soda?
-
A.
For best results use one tablespoon of Laundry Soda per LARGE
wash load. Wash according to the specific instructions on your
garments. Make sure to always test first on garments that may
bleed or fade. Nellie's™ Laundry Soda dissolves quickly in cold
or hot water.
-
Q.
Is the Laundry Soda scented?
-
A.
Traditional laundry detergents use scent to mask odors rather
than remove them. Many people associate the fresh smell of
scented products with cleanliness. Traditional soaps will clean
and scent the surface but may not actually penetrate the
material. Once the fragrance from the detergent dissipates, the
musty smell may return.
Nellie's laundry soda is unscented and designed to penetrate the
fabric as well as remove the odors, not mask them. Nellie's
rinses clear and leaves no residue.
If you would like your laundry to have a scent, consider a
natural linen spray or a lavender pouch that can be placed in
the dryer.
-
Q.
Do I have to open the nugget before putting it into the wash?
-
A.
No. The laundry nugget comes in a biodegradable wrap that
dissolves in any temperature water.
-
Q.
What are the Dryerballs made of?
-
A.
The Nellie's Dryerballs are made of a PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
plastic. PVC is used for many applications. It is widely used in
the healthcare sector, children's toys and food packaging.
-
Q.
Are Nellie's Dryerballs non-toxic and allergy-free?
-
A.
Unlike fabric softeners Nellie's™ Dryerballs™ are completely
non-toxic and allergy free! Dryerballs™ will never melt! They
are made of PVC plastic which can withstand very high
temperatures. This is the same plastic that your hot water pipes
are made from in your house.
A recent study from Anderson Laboratories gives a clue as to why
fabric softeners have become a bee in the bonnets. Here are the
details: Anderson Laboratories chemical analysis of the airborne
emissions of five different kinds of commonly available fabric
softeners was reported in the May, 2000 issue of the Journal of
Toxicology and Environmental Health. Their study revealed that
the fabric softeners emitted toluene, styrene, phenol, thymol,
xylene, and trimethylbenzene, among other chemicals, many of
which cause acute respiratory tract irritations and
inflammation. Fabric softener chemicals are made to stay in
cloths fibers and slowly release for a very long time. That slow
release of chemicals into the air affects the health of those
wearing the clothes and people around them.
Babies, children, older people, and people who are already sick
are especially hurt by these chemicals. Damage can be permanent,
causing longtime illness. Babies often react with rashes,
frequent crying and/or diarrhea. Disinfectants can have the same
effects. Experts suggest a possible connection between Sudden
Infant Death (crib death) and the use of these products for
washing babies' clothes and crib sheets and blankets.
Some symptoms caused by fabric softener fumes are: tiredness
that is not cured by resting, difficulty breathing, and
nervousness for no known reason, difficulty concentrating and
remembering, dizziness, headaches, sick stomach, feeling faint,
rashes and/or difficulty controlling body movements. For more
information, please visit nontoxic.com/nontoxic.
Get Rid of Fabric Softeners! Fabric softeners leave an oil
coating on clothes, which don't make them softer or fluffy. The
oil builds up on the fibers and takes the absorbency out (oil
repels water). In the dryer, fabric softener leaves a sticky
residue on all the components like the moisture sensors and drum
of the dryer. They plug it up and the residue is very flammable
(#1 cause of house fires is in the dryer). It tells you right on
the back of some fabric softeners not to use on towels,
terrycloth or fleece because it's highly flammable. Fabric
softeners take the fire retardant out of baby's clothes. Two
boxes of brand name fabric softeners are $20. People waste
hundreds of dollars on fabric softeners in a year's time.
Clean and Soften Fabrics Naturally. Nellie's™ All-Natural
Laundry Soda is hypoallergenic - perfect for baby clothes and
sensitive skin. It cleans all the way to the fiber, rinses
thoroughly and it leaves no residue. The little tips on
Nellie's™ Dryerballs retain the heat and massage the fibers in
the clothes opening them up and making them soft and fluffy
without the use of chemicals. Dryerballs can be used on any
fabrics - your delicates, your jeans, towels, bedding, etc.
